Archery: the long season
Illinois archery runs from October 1 to January 17, broken only by the firearm seasons. That is a genuinely long window and it is the reason archery is the most flexible thing we sell.
The trade off is range. Inside thirty or forty yards you have to be genuinely competent, and you have to be able to draw on an animal that is looking for you. If you have not shot a bow since last season, book the six day rather than the three, and use the range at the lodge on the evening you arrive.
Best value inside archery: early October, when the deer are still on a summer to fall food pattern and the county has zero pressure. Least appreciated: late December, for the opposite reason.
First firearm: the highest odds hunt we run
Illinois splits firearm deer season in two, and the first one is the one you want. In 2026 it falls on November 20, 21 and 22. That is three days sitting directly on the back of the rut, before any firearm pressure has hit the county, with a weapon that extends your effective range well beyond a bow.
Illinois is a shotgun and straight walled cartridge state for deer rather than a centrefire rifle state, which is a large part of why it grows the age structure it does. Check current legal equipment with the Illinois DNR before you travel.
If you have three days and you want the best chance of filling a tag, this is the block. Our first shotgun season hunt is $2,400 with lodging and meals.
Muzzleloader: the quiet one
Muzzleloader season is December 11, 12 and 13 in 2026. Three days, cold, and almost nobody out.
By December the rut is finished, bucks are worn down and hungry, and they go back onto a food pattern that is far easier to predict than anything in November. Late season food plots become the entire strategy, and ours are planted with this window specifically in mind. Add snow and the last hour of light over a standing plot is remarkable.
The catch is the weather. December in western Illinois is genuinely cold and the wind comes across open crop ground with nothing to stop it. Do not book this hunt with November gear.
The combination hunt, and why it exists
Booking one weapon is a bet on conditions. The archery and shotgun hunt removes the bet: you come in on archery, hunt the quiet days before the opener, then pick up a shotgun for first firearm.
The practical advantage is that your guide can be far more aggressive with stand placement early, because a stand burned on Tuesday is not the stand you are hunting on Friday. It is the best option for anyone travelling a long way who wants one trip to count.
A short table
| If you want | Book | 2026 dates |
|---|---|---|
| Most days, most flexibility | Archery, 6 day | Oct 1 – Jan 17 |
| The rut, properly | Rut archery, 6 day | First 3 weeks of Nov |
| Highest odds, fewest days | First shotgun | Nov 20 – 22 |
| Both weapons, one trip | Archery and shotgun | Late Nov |
| Quiet December movement | Muzzleloader | Dec 11 – 13 |
Whatever you pick, check the permit first
Each weapon has its own permit and its own deadline, and the nonresident ones close months before the season. That is on our permit guide.
03 · Questions
Quick answers.
Can I use a crossbow during Illinois archery season?
Illinois sets the rules on legal archery equipment and they have changed over the years. Check the current position with the Illinois DNR before you book.
Is Illinois a rifle state for deer?
Illinois firearm deer seasons are shotgun and straight walled cartridge rather than traditional centrefire rifle. Confirm current legal equipment with the Illinois DNR.
Which Illinois deer season has the best success rate?
First firearm season, November 20 to 22 in 2026, gives the highest odds in the fewest days because the rut is still running and the county has not been pressured yet.
