01 · Straight answer
What is hunting Henderson County, Illinois like?
Henderson County is in far western Illinois on the Mississippi River, and it produces the terrain and the agriculture that Illinois whitetail hunting is famous for, with a fraction of the outfitter pressure of the Pike County corridor two hours to the south.
The county is small and rural. It is bluff country where the river cuts it, and rolling farm ground behind that. Corn and soybeans dominate, with timber holding the draws and CRP filling the marginal ground. That is close to an ideal whitetail landscape: heavy food, broken cover and enough relief to concentrate movement.
Illinois as a state does the rest of the work. It has been a shotgun and archery state for deer rather than a centrefire rifle state for most of its modern history, which has let bucks reach older age classes than they do in a lot of the Midwest. Combine that with the soil, and this part of the state grows big bodied, heavy antlered deer.
What we would say honestly is that Henderson County is not a secret, but it is quieter than the counties that have been marketed for thirty years. There are fewer outfitters here. That shows up in how little our farms get bumped.
County by county harvest figures for Illinois are published by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Our own ground is described on the ground page, and the permit guide covers what a nonresident needs to hunt here.
